A Bush Christmas: Celebrating Connection and Service

Christmas is a season that invites us to pause, reflect, and think intentionally about those in our community who may feel isolated or alone, including residents in aged care. For The Lakes College, the Sages and Seekers program has been a powerful expression of this spirit, fostering meaningful intergenerational relationships with residents of Palm Lakes Aged Care in Deception Bay throughout the year.

The Sages and Seekers initiative has continued to flourish in 2025, bringing together students from Years 7 to 10 with elderly residents for weekly visits grounded in companionship, conversation, and care. Residents and staff regularly share how much joy and comfort the students bring, describing their visits as uplifting, energising, and deeply appreciated.

Interest from students has been overwhelmingly strong, with more than 80 Secondary students applying to participate. Each term, small groups of 10 students have spent time at Palm Lakes, forming genuine friendships through games, music, art, gardening, chats over cups of tea, and moments of shared stillness. Some of the most moving experiences have come from simple acts of presence: holding the hand of a 98-year-old resident, extending a balloon-tennis game because the laughter continued, or sitting quietly with someone unable to respond yet fully connected in spirit. One resident who had not left her room in almost a year joined in with great joy, an unforgettable moment for students and staff.

Earlier this term, the College responded to a special request from the residents with a “Bush Christmas” puppet show. Entirely student-led, the performance was created through scriptwriting, puppet-making, and lunchtime rehearsals. The students intentionally shaped the show to reflect the residents’ favourite music, personal stories, and historical experiences, many shaped by the Great Depression and the Second World War. The performance was warmly received and brought laughter, nostalgia, and festive cheer.

Throughout the year, handmade gifts such as throw rugs, tea cozies, and creative craft items have been exchanged between students, staff, and residents. These thoughtful gestures echo the heart of the Christmas message: generosity, compassion, and love expressed through simple acts of kindness.

The Lakes College community has also walked alongside Palm Lakes residents during moments of loss, farewelling several beloved community members who passed away this year. These experiences have offered students profound lessons in empathy, dignity, and honouring the stories of others.

As Christmas draws near, The Lakes College reflects with gratitude on a year of service, learning, and heartfelt connection across generations. The College acknowledges the compassion and dedication shown by all participating students and staff, whose actions continue to embody the spirit of Christ-like love, particularly towards those in aged care, during this special season.
