Just a Few More Weeks Until Prep

In just a few short weeks, your child will walk through the Prep classroom doors for the very first time, backpack on, hat slightly too big, and a heart full of curiosity. As the first day of school approaches, many families experience a mix of excitement, pride and emotion as they prepare their child for this important milestone.

From the moment you step into a Prep classroom at The Lakes College, you’ll notice a warm, joyful and engaging environment where every space invites exploration and discovery.

Through a play and project-based pedagogy inspired by the Walker Learning approach, your child is encouraged to be an active participant in their learning journey. The Prep program is designed to nurture:

  • curiosity and imagination

  • creativity and expression

  • collaboration and teamwork

  • confidence and communication

  • independence and problem solving

It’s not just about what your child learns — it’s about how they learn. Prep supports the development of confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.

Preparing Your Child for Prep, a Shared Journey

The transition to Prep is a partnership between the school and your family. In the weeks leading up to the first day, there are many gentle ways you can help your child feel confident, calm and ready for this new experience.

Pre-School Readiness Skills
You can support your child by practicing skills such as recognising and writing their first name, listening to stories, and managing simple self-care tasks like dressing and toileting.

Becoming Familiar With Routines
Talk with your child about what a school day looks like, practice packing a school bag and using a lunchbox, and begin establishing regular home routines.

Building Confidence Before the First Day
Help your child become familiar with their class information, speak positively about their teacher and new learning environment, and prepare healthy snacks and lunches together.

When your child feels supported and reassured, they are more likely to approach their first day with confidence and excitement.

Helpful First-Day Reminders for You and Your Child

To help your child feel settled on their first morning, it may be helpful to:

  • confirm class and teacher details ahead of time

  • help your child become familiar with staff titles (Mr, Mrs, Miss)

  • ensure they are wearing the correct uniform and sun-safe hat

  • pack morning tea, lunch, a fruit snack and a water bottle

  • arrive early enough to unpack and settle into the room

  • remember learning begins at 8:30am (classrooms open 8:15am)

  • say goodbye confidently, without “sneaking away”, and reassure your child you’ll be back at 3:00pm

  • talk about the day ahead in a positive and encouraging way

These small steps can make a big difference in helping your child feel safe and secure.
