This September, The Lakes College in North Lakes is set to unveil the highly anticipated Stage 2 of its Aquatic Precinct: the 'Learn to Swim' facility. This milestone marks the completion of the precinct, which initially opened in September 2022, and promises to elevate the College's swimming education offerings to new heights.
The first stage of the Aquatic Precinct featured an eight-lane, 25m heated outdoor swimming pool, accompanied by a kiosk and well-equipped amenities that included change rooms, showers and toilets. Stage 2 will essentially double the precinct’s footprint, introducing a dedicated 20m indoor, heated learn-to-swim pool. This new addition is designed to create an optimal learning environment, featuring climate control for consistent swimming conditions throughout the year, ensuring comfort and safety for all participants.
One of the standout enhancements in Stage 2 is the inclusion of a shaded grandstand adjacent to the existing outdoor pool, with seating capacity for 500 spectators. This facility upgrade will provide comfortable, undercover seating for parents, carers and students during Interhouse Swimming Carnivals and lessons, fostering a supportive community atmosphere. Additionally, the new facility emphasises accessibility, offering all-abilities access from the car park to both pools and amenities areas, ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy the aquatic facilities.
The Lakes College Director of Aquatics, Mackenzie Speechley, expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the Aquatic Precinct and the expanded capabilities it brings. “The Stage 2 pool will allow us to have the learn-to-swim part of the precinct and program – babies from three months old will be able to have their lessons with us,” Mackenzie noted. “The addition of the second pool will allow us to teach anyone, any level, any age to swim.”
Central to the new facility is its team of certified and experienced instructors. Each instructor is dedicated to delivering personalised attention, ensuring that every swimmer receives the guidance and support necessary to build confidence and master essential swimming skills. From toddlers taking their first splash to seasoned swimmers refining their techniques, the Learn to Swim program is designed to cater to a wide range of abilities and ages.
Moreover, the program places a strong emphasis on water safety education. Understanding that swimming proficiency goes hand in hand with water safety, each lesson incorporates vital safety principles. This holistic approach ensures that every swimmer not only learns how to swim but also how to stay safe in and around water, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed for various aquatic situations.
As the opening of the Learn to Swim facility approaches, excitement is building within the North Lakes community.
