TLC Mooting Team win the UniSQ Secondary Schools Moot Competition

Our TLC Mooting Team (Molly T, Octavia C and Carys L) won the UniSQ Secondary Schools Moot Competition for 2022, overcoming Fairholme College in the grand final at the Ipswich Magistrates Court before District Court Judge, His Honour Judge Alexander Horneman-Wren SC; District Court Judge, His Honour Judge Ian Dearden and UniSQ Head of School, Law and Justice, Professor Reid Mortensen. Not only was the team victorious, but Octavia was regarded as the best single advocate of the Grand Final. Each member of the team was awarded a scholarship for a full year’s study in the Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Southern Queensland, valued at around $14,624. The Team also won the Turner Freeman Lawyers Prize of $1,500 cash (for the team), with Octavia receiving the Shine Lawyers Advocate’s Prize, worth $2,000 in cash. The Lakes College prevailed over 23 teams from 15 schools in the Toowoomba and wider Brisbane region. The grand final was the culmination of a round robin competition, which commenced earlier in May. The Team Coordinator and Coach, Mr Flynn, could not be prouder of how the team performed. He notes the victory is the direct result of the determination, drive, talent and extraordinary capacity of the students involved, also noting the tremendous support they received from their Year 12 mentors (Therese M, Aarush S and Maisie W) who were in attendance. A big thank you to our parents and carers for their presence and support, as well as Mrs Gregory for her engagement and presence throughout. This competition was a true test and gives great credence to the TLC Mooting Club motto - Fortuna Eruditis Favet “Fortune Favours the Prepared Mind”.
